When designing a kitchen, base cabinets lay the foundation. They set the tone for the entire space and influence how you function in your every day. In this guide, we’ll explore our favourite custom kitchen base cabinets.

What are base cabinets?

Base cabinets are the lower cabinets in a kitchen resting on the floor. They provide support for countertops and contain storage space behind a door or in drawers, custom organizers, and pull-out shelves.

Types of Custom Kitchen Base Cabinets

There are a few basic types of base cabinets:

  • Base Cabinet with Drawer
  • Base Cabinet with Door
  • Trash Cabinet or Recycle Center
  • Sink Cabinet
  • Corner Base Cabinet

Let’s go over some of our favourite base cabinets, the tried and true kitchen cabinets that we recommend for your renovation.

Base Cabinet with Drawers

We love base cabinet units with drawers. They provide organized storage space for large and small items, all within easy to reach access. Base kitchen cabinets with drawers are very popular and come in many configurations, depending on the needs of the homeowner.

Base Cabinet with 3 Drawer Stack

We find the most common bank of drawers is a bank of 3, with one or two deep drawers and at least one shallow drawer. With custom cabinets, kitchen designers can dictate the heights of each drawer, as well as the height and width of the cabinet itself

Base Cabinet with 4 Drawer Stack

We recommend at least one bank of four cabinet drawers in every kitchen. It provides extra vertical storage for items like parchment paper, tupperware lids, tea towels, etc.

Base Cabinet with Trash Pull-Out

A hidden trash unit is a must have in any custom kitchen. Tucked discreetly behind a cabinet door, it keeps trash out of sight, reducing odors and freeing up valuable floor space.

Trash Unit and Drawer

We love this trash system, as it’s adjustable in width. Two 35 litre bins provide a lot of space for trash/recycling. It also includes heavy duty hardware which is nice when you’re putting off taking the trash out!

Sink Base Cabinet

Of all the kitchen base cabinets, this one may be one of the most crucial. Every kitchen has a sink, which requires a specialized cabinet to support the countertop and sink, while accommodating the plumbing below.

Sink Cabinet with U-Shaped Drawers

This sink cabinet has U-shaped drawers that create a space in the middle for plumbing. In contrast to the traditional door front sink cabinet, this design provides easy access to items under the sink with accessible soft-close drawers.

Base Cabinet with Custom Organizer

There are many custom organizers that can add function to your kitchen. Check out all our custom cabinet accessories here.

Corner Base Cabinet

Unless you have a galley or one-wall kitchen, you will need at least one corner cabinet. This can be a tricky spot for organization, but rest assured there are many custom options that will make this hard to reach area more accessible.
