This recipe is for those who love the chewiness of a chocolate chip cookie, but don’t want the fuss of making a whole batch of cookies. A classic recipe from Company’s Coming 150 Delicious Squares by Jean Paré, these chocolate chip squares are sure to be a crowd pleaser – trust me!
My mom used to make this exact recipe growing up. It was a good day when I would come home from school and the yummy smell of chocolate chip squares were coming from the kitchen!
I have made these squares for all kinds of events and they are not only hard to mess up, but they are always well received. (No leftovers!) They are great on their own or eaten warm with ice cream and chocolate sauce drizzled on top. Think a chocolate chip cookie turned into a brownie square. The edges get a tiny bit crispy and the center is soft and chewy. So delicious.
On separate occasions I have doubled the recipe in a 9×13 and have made substitutions and I genuinely think this is the best no fail surefire recipe for chocolate chip squares. You have to try them!
1⁄2 cup (room temp.) butter or margarine
1⁄2 cup brown sugar, packed
1⁄4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1⁄2 cup walnuts (optional)
Substitutions: I have used dark brown sugar instead of brown and substituted chocolate chips for m&ms or white chocolate chips with good results. I also decrease the amount of chocolate chips sometimes because otherwise they are very chewy with all the melted chocolate. Much like brownies, the wetter the mixture the more fudgy the squares will be and the dryer the mixture the more cakey they will turn out. You can add a bit of milk to thin it out if needed, or add a bit more flour if your mix is pretty wet. Once you make them a few times you will know what the best is for your taste!
I usually make these in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment but my mom always did it by hand, either works!
- In medium-size bowl, cream butter with brown sugar. I let the mixer run for a few min until the butter and sugar look fluffy.
- Add white sugar and cream again.
- Add egg and vanilla and beat well.
- Measure in flour, soda and salt.
- Stir until well blended.
- Add chips and nuts stirring to combine.
- Scrape into 9X9 inch pan.
- Bake in 350°F oven for 25 to 30 minutes until set and a nice brown color.
- When cooled cut into squares.
Alterations: I have often doubled the recipe and baked in a 9×13 dish. I have also made it in an 8×8 with no changes to the recipe other than cook time. I assume you can make these in a circle dish as well for a cookie cake! Put a toothpick in and if it comes out clean (without accidentally poking a chocolate chip) it’s done!
Serving the Chocolate Chip Squares
These are great cooled and cut into squares for an afternoon coffee snack. However, if you want to take it up a notch, serve slightly warm in a bowl with ice cream on top and a chocolate drizzle. Add sprinkles or other toppings to make a delicious treat.
I hope you enjoy these Company’s Coming chocolate chip squares as much as my family does!
